The Solution to Pollution
Hazardous waste generated by residents and businesses can reach our waterways through sewers, stormdrains and landfills to pollute the local environment. This new facility will help prevent pollution by offering a convenient means for proper disposal of household hazardous waste.
Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (Central San) has teamed up with the Mt. View Sanitary District (MVSD) to build and operate the first permanent Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility in Contra Costa County.
The HHW Collection Facility is located adjacent to Central San’s wastewater treatment plant in Martinez, south of Solano Way from Highway 4.
Hazardous waste generated from households in the central Contra Costa County area will be accepted at no charge.
Small businesses will be charged a nominal disposal fee, based on the type and quantity of waste to be disposed. Please call 1-800-646-1431 for more information.
To keep hazardous waste disposal to a minimum, the HHW Collection Facility offers a reuse program where residents and business can take usable products at no charge. Available are pesticides, herbicides, automotive products, cleaning products and paints. Anti-freeze, used motor oil, and car batteries will be recycled off site.
The facility was constructed using various materials with recycled contents such as newspapers, plastics and glass from community recycling programs, to “close the recycling loop”.
The Facility also features a “less toxic garden” using Integrated Pest Management techniques which maintain a healthy garden without using toxic chemicals to control pests.

What is HHW?
Many products found in your home are potentially hazardous substances. They consist of chemical compounds and can poison, corrode, explode or ignite when handled improperly. These substances are considered household hazardous waste (HHW) and can threaten human and environmental health. For this reason, HHW is not exempt from California hazardous waste laws. It is illegal to dispose of HHW in the trash or down household and storm drains. That is why Central Contra Costa and Mt. View Sanitary Districts built the HHW collection facility to give local residents and small businesses a convenient and environmentally safe means for HHW disposal and recycling.
What is accepted at the Facility?
Household Cleaners: bleach and liquid cleaners, upholstery cleaners, oven cleaners, furniture polishes, tub and tile cleaners
Personal Care Products: includes products containing plastic microbeads (indicated by the words polyethyleneor polypropylene on the label)
Automotive Care Products: used motor oil, used batteries, brake and transmission fluids, antifreeze, solvents
Paint and Paint-related Products: oil based paint, latex paint, wood stain, paint remover
Garden Care and Pest Control Products: pesticides, herbicides, rodent baits, ant and roach sprays
Mercury Containing Products: thermometers, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury switches

What is Not Accepted at the Facility?
How should I package and transport my HHW?
Materials must be packaged in sturdy, non-leaking containers no larger than 5 gallons. Original containers are recommended. Small leaking containers can be individually placed in ziploc bags. Larger leaking containers should be placed in separate, covered, and non-leaking containers for transport. Five (5) gallon plastic buckets are available at most hardware stores and make good transporting containers.
State regulations limit the transportation of HHW to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per vehicle per visit. Individual containers are limited to 5 gallon capacity.
