Did You Know?

Pile of prescription medication bottles with labels and safety warnings.

Did you know that improperly disposed of unused or expired prescription drugs are a public safety issue? Unused and/or expired prescription medications thrown in the trash can be retrieved, abused, or illegally sold. Medications that are flushed or put down the drain have a negative impact on the environment as wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to remove these pharmaceuticals from the wastewater and so they end up in the environment and have a negative impact on aquatic life.

Find a safe disposal location at https://www.mvsd.org/safe-medication-disposal-locations. Drop-off instructions for these locations are:

  1. Take medications out of their original containers and put them in a sealable plastic bag.
  2. Do NOT dispose of syringes or needles with medications.
  3. Leave liquids in their original container, mark out personal information, then place bottle in a sealable plastic bag.
