Protecting Moorhen Marsh

Overgrown vegetation behind a fence, a black tarp on the ground, and a warning sign.

A small stand of Arundo was discovered in Moorhen Marsh. Arundo (Arundo donax), also known as “giant reed,” is a non-native plant that is highly invasive in California. Arundo usually grows along streams or other waterways, where it causes erosion and destroys fish and wildlife habitat. It grows in thick stands that can create flood hazards by blocking the flow of water. It is also a fire hazard because it burns easily even when green. The stand in Moorhen Marsh spread from a neighboring property. MVSD staff sought expertise on proper removal and promptly removed the stand to protect Moorhen Marsh and other downstream water bodies.

You can find resources to learn more about Arundo, and how it can be removed safely and effectively through the Alhambra Watershed Council’s fact sheet at: https://mvsd.org/arundo
